As an academic there may be two occasions where you need to work with the media: 1) to disseminate the results of your research; or 2) as an expert to provide context and comment on news stories of the day. Professor Ryder will draw on decades of experience to offer some tips in working with the media. You should remember that you are not alone. Your Faculty and your University have skilled public relations professionals ready to assist. However, when the microphone is live, you need to be an engaging storyteller giving people “news they can use.”
Marvin Ryder is Associate Professor of marketing and entrepreneurship at the DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University. He has taught for almost 40 years and has mentored 10,000 graduate and undergraduate students. He has written sixty case studies illustrating marketing, entrepreneurship, and business strategy problems with companies like Porsche, Union Gas, Crayola, and Molson Breweries.
In Hamilton, Marvin served on the Board of Directors for Copps Coliseum, Hamilton Place, and the Hamilton Convention Centre from 1990 to 1996. He was the Chair of the Transition Board that created the new City of Hamilton in 2000. Marvin was Chair of the Hamilton Health Sciences Board of Directors for almost three years and retired from the Board in 2010 after nine years of service. He has also served on the Boards of the Bay Area Health Trust, Desjardins Credit Union, and is currently the Chair of the Hamilton Health Sciences Research Institute.
Today, Marvin is most recognized for nearly 250 appearances annually on CBC, CTV, Global, CHML 900AM, CKTB 610AM, and other regional broadcasters commenting on the political and business issues of the day.
